What's Your Cup Size?

Believe it or not, at least 80% women wear the wrong size bra, some studies show as much as 95%. The most common mistake is wearing a bra which is too loose around the back, and too small in the cups. Although the average bra size is often quoted as being 36C, this is just the most popular size that women buy. Most people who wear an "average" 36C bra should actually be wearing either a 34D, 34DD, 32DD or 32E, with the true average size being around 34DD.

So how do bra sizes work? Most people know that bra sizes are made up of two parts - a number and a letter. The number is known as the "band size" or "back size," and the letter is the "cup size." However, what many people do not realize is that cup sizes are in proportion to the band size, so a D cup, for example, is not the same size in every bra. A 32D is the same size as a 34C or 36B, but on a smaller frame. A 28F is actually 5 cup sizes smaller than a 38F, so it's not as big as it sounds! If you are fairly slim, then you may well need a large cup size even though your bust doesn't look any bigger than average. Larger women may still need a small band size because this relates to the size of your ribcage only - you can still be curvy everywhere else!

Losing or gaining just a few kilos is likely to have an effect on your bra size. Sometimes you go for so long wearing a certain size that you don't realize it doesn't fit well anymore and you stop noticing the discomfort. If you're looking for a better fit, here's how to find your true bra size.

Follow this steps :

ᵔᴥᵔ Measure your band size

Run a tape measure all the way around your body just underneath your breasts and take a measurement in inches. Make sure the tape measure is horizontal and fairly snug. Your arms should be down.
If this measurement is an odd number, round up to the nearest even number. This should be your band size. For example, if you measured 31 inches, your band size should be 32.
If your measurement is already an even number, you may find that this is your band size, or you may have to go up to the next size (i.e, you may have to add 4 inches.)

ᵔᴥᵔ Determine your cup size.

Since everyone's breasts are different, the most accurate way to determine your cup size is by using your current bra size as a starting point. The cups are sized relative to the band, so if you were to try a smaller band size but keep the same cup size, the cups would be too small.
Measure just like measuring your band size, after that find the deviation.

1. How to measure Band size?

At first, run the tape over your rib cage and directly under the bust.
Then, add 12.5 c.m. to the resulting measure.
Suppose your Chest width is 72.5 c.m. then bra size will be 72.5 + 12.5 = 85 c.m.
As most bra size available in the market are only in 80, 85, 90c.m. it must be divided with 5.
If measuring result is not divisible with 5 then add any figure from 0.5 to 2.5 c.m. so that it can be divided by 5.
For example: If the width of Chest is 75 c.m. then bra size becomes 75.0 + 12.5 = 87.5 + 2.5 = 90 c.m.

Alternative method of Band size:

Measure your tape over your rib cage directly under the bust. If you get measurement in odd number, then it is better to round down to the next even number for band size. As bras have tended to stretch over time and nearly all bras have a few sets of adjustable eyes and hooks, you can able to adjust the tightness.

You can also estimate your band size by running a tape across the top of your breast, under your arms and high on your back. It is easiest method as you don't need to do any addition or any calculation. But it is less accurate than using the above measure method.

2. How to measure cup size?

Run the tape loosely across the bust or the fullest part of your breasts.
Afterwards, subtract your bra size from the bust measurement.
The difference between the measurement of the fullest part of the bust and of your bra size which you calculate is your cup-size.

For instance:

If your band measurement is 36" and your bust measurement is 38", the difference between both measurements is of two inches, so you need to select a B-cup for your bra size.

If your bra size is 90 c.m. and you measure 95 c.m. around your fullest bust part, then cup size is Bust size - Bra size = 95-90 = 5c.m. This also means B cup.

International Bra Cup Size Systems

It can be easier to find a perfect fit with this system: the slightly smaller difference between cups seems to lessen the incidence of women being between sizes.

Australian sizing includes a DD cup, followed by an E cup and then runs in consecutive alphabetical order, however as for the UK method, it also omits the I cup from this sequence, ie:

USA/ASIA

The USA system is another imperial sizing method in which the difference between cup sizes for cups D and beyond is one inch. Again the B & C cups are based on dressmaking pattern standards with a smaller difference between cups and relative to dress size. The US system of cup sizing adopted by many Asian nations uses a DD and DDD cup (more recently these are commonly being relabelled E & F cup) followed directly by the G Cup. Unlike the UK/CAN & AU/NZ models, the US system includes an I cup, ie:
